Bobby Grant Keeps Capital BMX in Top Gear

The Capital BMX Club received a welcome boost recently, with a $12k grant from the Bobby Foundation to help fund essential resurfacing of its popular BMX track in Karori, Wellington.
The 370 metre track - one of the largest in the lower North Island - sees over 10,000 public users annually, ranging from preschoolers to seasoned riders. With its 5 metre start ramp and 2,000 square metres of lime surface, the facility requires regular upkeep to remain safe and race-ready.
Without regular maintenance, the lime surface can quickly degrade - especially in Wellington’s wind and rain. If not properly watered and rolled during resurfacing, the lime can simply blow away, making it unusable. This latest round of maintenance ensures the track is in top shape for both competitive events and daily community use.
Club President, David Harkness explained, “Club members work hard to maintain the facility, but even with volunteer labour, it costs money to bring the lime surface material to site and we couldn’t do it without the support from the Bobby Foundation.”
“Capital BMX is very grateful for this funding," David shared, “Over the last three years more than $50k has been awarded, which has allowed us to fully resurface and maintain our track.”
David emphasised the value of the track, not only to the club, but also the wider community, “The club races each weekend during the season from September to April (and a fair few weekends through the off-season too) and hold training sessions during the week in daylight savings months. When the BMX club isn't using the track for racing or training, it is open to the public for free.“
This track isn’t just for racers. It’s for families, kids, mountain bikers and others to enjoy.
Bobby is proud to support Kiwi legends on the track.
